A LASTING SYMBOL OF REMEMBRANCE
The remarkable story behind the WW1 Memorial Plaque.
More than a century after the end of the First World War, the Memorial Plaque remains one of its most poignant and recognisable symbols.
Often called the “Death Penny” because of its circular shape and bronze appearance, the plaque was presented to the next of kin of British and Commonwealth personnel who lost their lives as a result of the war.
More than 1.3 million were issued—but every plaque represented one individual, one family and one deeply personal loss.
